Wet weather can also cause some streams and rivers to become impassable.

The walk should take around 1-2 hours, and probably won’t take up the whole of the day, and it gives you some extraordinary views over Derwent water and the other mountains.

Despite the gusty weather we encountered, my 8 & 11 year found this a good hill to start with as... I think I'd been walking in the Lakes for more than 10 years taking on all the high level summits (Skiddaw, Hellvelyn, etc) before I bothered to climb Catbells - even when climbing Dale Head along the Newlands valley I started from Littletown so never climbed its summit despite being within striking distance. It's a decent climb up paths and then you'll have a small scrabble before you reach the peak....ha what am I saying, you'll get to what you think is high up then go "bugger! That was certainly not my experience, although as one not to give up lightly, I did make it to the summit.

I'd thought I could whip round the six magnificent peaks that surround Newlands Valley and be at the jetty at the foot of Catbells to catch the last boat to Keswick at 4.40pm. We walked on a very hot day by it was amazing!Easy to get there by motor launch too. Must also say it's worth getting an ice-cream from the van after a walk. Lovely views from the top but be prepared it's a very popular route so expect to share the summit with numerous walkers, we have walked this hill many times over the years and it never fails to disappoint. I would say that the ascent of catbells is not particularly difficult compared to the other climbs in the Lake District, however should not be underestimated. The walk is great for families, as it isn’t too strenuous and is a great beginner mountain for children and people who aren’t familiar with climbing. more.

It’s not the highest hill in the area, but it’s certainly a spectacular one. To stand on the shores of Derwentwater and look over to see Catbells and think I have climbed up there is worth every step you have taken to reach the top.

Nothing too strenuous or dangerous if you have a helping hand but if this is your first fell don't believe some reviews of how easy it is! Review tags are currently only available for English language reviews. more.

It is popular and is quite a steep climb - especially for those not used to fell walking - but providing the weather holds - well worth the effort. However, we still managed to find some free spots but I'm sure these will soon get snapped up on good weather days - so get there reasonably early if you want to be guaranteed a space. My wife found this a bit taxing and shouldn't be walked alone unless you're used to this terrain. We took the boat across the lake from Keswick to the Hawes End Pier where we took the trail up Catbells. Didn't get to the second peak as it looked a bit too tricky for my 6 year old daughter but the 1st peak is rewarding enough. Review tags are currently only available for English language reviews. Parking can be a bit of a nightmare if you attempt it from the North - so we decided to park near Littletown - this parking always used to be free - but the local farmer is now charging £3 for the main parking area. My husband, a seasoned hiker and fell runner, set out to introduce me to the joys of climbing. It was a fairly easy walk but somewhat steep. It was a fairly easy walk but somewhat steep.

We had a family walk up Cat Bells .We weren’t as early as we had hoped and parking was difficult, but once we were sorted our walk was spectacular all the way..It’s the first climb our grandsons had done in the lakes and now they want to do more,We had to scramble for part of the walk at the summit and would suggest allowing plenty of time for coming down as it’s very steep and slippery.Tho only down side was that people had littered the little car park area with used doggy bags and we would have liked to picnic there. read more, Catbells is a very popular Lake District walk and it’s easy to see why. It's good location means you are rewarded with excellent views with only a modest climb. There is an excellent circular walk possible with the lower walk or even through the forest along the lakeside. Enjoyable. Once you almost reach the summit - suddenly Dewent Water appears and all the effort is worthwhile - a great little summit, This is the version of our website addressed to speakers of English in the United States.

There is a small section when a bit of scrambling over rocks is required. It's worth the effort to reach the top and marvel at the spectacular Lakeland views. Don't get me wrong it's no ice picks and crampons affair, but it's no doddle either. Its an ideal fell to climb if you have two hours to spare to get up and down - to get some good exercise and get great views of Derwent water, the Newlands valley and the surrounding fells. All too common on every walk we went on unfortunately.

Good simple walk for all the family, you will be surrounded by lots of people as very popular. There is easy parking, right at the bottom of the mountain.
